Our Research Advances

Our research advances have made a difference.Vascular Cures’ investment in research has resulted in an improved understanding of the vascular system and its functions in both health and disease. Our focus is on translational research - accelerating the pathway from scientific discovery to improved patient care.

Our researchers’ accomplishments lay a strong foundation for the development of new ways to predict, prevent and treat vascular disease.  Their work includes fundamental advances in technology, genetics, drug development and regenerative medicine targeting common vascular conditions.

Our technology investment has contributed to the development and improvement of minimally invasive approaches (stent-grafts) for the treatment of aneurysms of the aorta in the abdomen and chest.

Our investment in basic and clinical research has resulted in a number of significant discoveries and innovative programs that may lead to new therapies:

  • Discovered a gene linked to brain blood vessel malformations, a condition which causes half of the hemorrhagic strokes in children and young adults
  • Elucidating the molecular pathways that regulate blood vessel growth,  which may lead to new  treatments for people suffering with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and cancer
  • Identified a protein that reduces atherosclerosis, which might someday enable a therapy to arrest or reverse it.
  • Using adult stem cells and advanced tissue-engineering technology to create new blood vessels for bypass grafts for patients who lack other treatment options
  • Investigating why vascular bypass grafts fail, which may lead to new therapies to increase the long-term durability of these and other common vascular procedures
  • Developing a drug to control the growth of abdominal aortic aneurysms, in clinical trials
  • Investigating a drug which might prevent spinal cord injury following surgical repair of thoraco-abdominal aneurysms
